Our article on peer pressure outlines the positives and negatives, it says that when you were little your parents chose your friends for you by engaging you in team sports or play dates and now that your older you chose your own peers. Some adolescents chose a more hardworking on their grades type group which are normally straight A students, and other teens chose a the party hard group which usually prefers partying all night long to studying, there are many other types of groups at a school but those two where the ones mentioned.
It is understandable for parents to be worried about their children making bad choices in the very social group that's why they try to intervene in their childrens friendship group. This can only end negatively as teens will most probably go against the parents ideas as a group that they should be in. It is also easy for parents to blame their teenagers friends for their reckless behaviour and that is normally why parents step in and try to change their childs friendship group.
There are things a parent can do however to help their child from making bad choices such as helping your child find a sense of identity is probably the best cure, adolescents can no longer be told what to do and what not to do they have to make their own choices and develop their own sense of what's important.
